Gearing Up is the student work placement program for Canada’s mining industry. It brings industry stakeholders together to create new work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities to better position post-secondary students to secure employment in their field of study. Led by MiHR, Gearing Up is creating over 1250 new WIL opportunities. Wage subsidies up to $7,500 are available to employers who create new coops, internships, field placements, applied projects, capstone projects or case competitions. MiHR works with a national consortium of mining employers, service providers, industry associations and post-secondary institutions to implement program activities and inform how industry and education can work together more collaboratively through WIL.

The Portal is for employers and students involved in the Gearing Up program. This site enables mining employers to efficiently provide all relevant and required details for the wage subsidy program and monitor the progress of their applications. • Funding is available during three sessions per year: Summer, Fall, Winter.
• Student participants and employers are required to find their own co-op placements.

• Canadian-owned or Canadian subsidiary
• Small, medium, or large companies involved in the mining or mineral exploration sector.
• Post-secondary educational institution.
• Not-for-profit organization.
• Financially capable of hiring a student for a part- or full-time work term, paying them consistently and supporting a meaningful work experience.

• Be registered in a full-time or part-time post-secondary program.
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection given under the law.
• Be legally able to work in Canada according to the laws and regulations of the province or territory where they live.
• Be studying in fields related to science, technology, engineering, mathematics and/or business.
• International students are not eligible for a Gearing Up wage subsidy.
